Follow one of the numerous marked trekking paths in the area to catch magnificent views, immerse yourself in history, and experience a side of Olympiada only a few get to see. The area is evolving into a massive trekking destination, currently counting more than 15 paths. The Aristotelian Walk seems to be the most popular one, as it traces the footsteps of Aristotle, the philosopher, on a very scenic route through lush vegetation, from Aristotle’s Park all the way down to Ancient Stagira (Olympiada).
Tip: check this online booklet for more marked trekking paths in Olympiada and Eastern Chalkidiki
Put on your mask and snorkel and dive into Olympiada’s crystal waters to discover its fascinating marine biodiversity! Expect to encounter anything from colorful shells, starfish, and dozens of different fish breeds to seahorses (if you get really lucky).
Tip: if you are feeling extra adventurous, catch a small boat to Kafkanas island, the island right opposite Olympiada, to increase your chances of even more memorable underwater encounters. And if you want to take it to the next level, have a diving class in one of the diving schools in Tripiti, a 40-minute drive from Olympiada.
Tired of yet another day at the beach? Head to the waterfalls instead! Waterfall swimming is a whole different experience, and you don’t know you need it until you try it! It’s a 20-minute drive from Casa Alegria to the parking area on the mountain, where the paths to two mesmerizing waterfalls start. Once you get to the parking area, the road splits into two different paths, each one leading to a different waterfall. The path on the left is easy and the average person can follow it without any difficulty at all. The path on the right is easy as well for the biggest part, but the last few meters taking you down to this specific waterfall are a bit steep and it takes a little bit of climbing up and down. Nothing too demanding, but it may still be a bit hard or “scary” for some people to do. If feeling unsure, opt for the waterfall on the left.
Tip: To enjoy the waterfalls undisturbed and have the ultimate mystical experience, go early in the morning. And don’t forget, whichever path you choose, no matter how easy, be careful and always mind your step.
Volvi Lake, located only half an hour away from Olympiada, is one of the most important wetlands not only in Greece but in the entire Balkan peninsula. Hosting 106 bird species on a permanent basis and another 142 species of migratory birds during winter, Volvi Lake is estimated to be the home of 20.000 aquatic birds. A visit to the lake with a good pair of binoculars at hand is a must for all nature lovers.
Tip: As the saying goes, “the early bird catches the worm”. So, if you want to increase your chances of seeing any rare bird species, head to the lake very early in the morning.
Volvi Lake is not only an ideal place for birdwatching, but for watersports too! Rent a canoe and take in the magnificent views from a different viewpoint. Looking for something edgier? You can even take a windsurfing class!
Tip: If water is not your element, you can always rent a bike for a ride around the lake.
Gliding on the water, taming the wind and the waves, or flying right over them? You name it! With such a variety of watersports being offered just 40 minutes away from Olympiada, in Nea Roda and Ouranoupoli, you can rest assured that you will find something to get you off your sunbed for good.
Tip: If you are visiting with kids, or if you too want to start from something more low-key, you can also rent a SUP or a sea bike.
So, which one will be your own adrenaline fix?
